FOR THE HEALTH OF OUR PATIENTS AND OUR COMMUNITY
Medical science does not stand still and that is a good thing for us all. To keep up with the latest advances and ensure evidence-based care, medical associations regularly develop clinical guidelines. As a result, the Infectious Diseases Society of America has released its Guidelines for the Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment of Lyme Disease.
The Infectious Diseases Society of America, American Academy of Neurology, and American College of Rheumatology jointly formed a panel to manage the guidelines development process. A review of the medical literature surrounding Lyme disease was conducted by an independent medical library and served as the basis for the development of the guidelines. In accordance with recommendations from the National Academy of Medicine and best guideline development practices, we searched multiple medical databases, including both published research and study registries containing as yet unpublished studies.
This guideline took longer to develop than we had hoped. It was crucial that we thoroughly reviewed the leading medical research and findings to provide guidelines that will best address the needs of patients and their physicians. With science moving at an ever-faster pace, we are committing to reviewing the guidelines for possible updates as the evidence evolves.
