IDSA takes the creation of guidelines very seriously. After all, the goal is to provide our physician peers with accurate, evidence-based information to assist them in treating their patients as effectively as possible. Read the IDSA, AAN & ACR Guidelines for the Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment of Lyme Disease.
We carefully combed medical journals for high quality science. In addition to IDSA members, our panel included appointed members of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and American College of Rheumatology (ACR).
Because Lyme disease is a complex disease that can present very differently from one individual to the next, we also partnered with the following medical and scientific associations:
In order to make sure patients have a seat at the table, we also had three patients who have had Lyme disease and the parent of a pediatric Lyme patient on our guideline panel. All were reviewed for possible conflicts of interest and found to have no conflicts.

Advocating for Answers
Lyme disease can be devastating for patients and for families who don’t want to see their loved ones suffer.
We understand your frustration and we care about your health. That’s why we are advocating for more research to better understand the disease and its lingering effects.
The fact is, key gaps remain in our understanding of Lyme disease. We need to close those gaps to improve patient care and our guidelines committee is advocating for more research into Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases.
We believe that research should not be limited to medical and scientific efforts. We need to listen to patients with long-term symptoms. That’s why we previously sought public comment on approximately 80 clinical questions regarding what should be included in the Guidelines for Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment of Lyme Disease.

About The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA)
The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) represents more than 12,000 physicians, scientists and other health care professionals who specialize in infectious diseases – illnesses caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. Some infectious diseases, like influenza, are highly contagious and can be passed from person to person. Other infectious diseases, such as Lyme disease, which is transmitted through the bite of an infected tick, are not as easy to catch.
IDSA’s purpose is to improve your health and that of your community and the country at large. We work towards this goal by providing education about infectious diseases and how to prevent them. We promote excellence in patient care, research, and public health. For more information, please contact us at [email protected].
